The Legend of Echoback Landing: Aniimo story and walkthrough

This Journey legend takes place at Echoback Landing and has three sections: help the painter Sorora make the Echoback bones sing, patrol with a Shelly who wants to succeed the old Sherro, then help perfumer Elvira recreate Whisper of Longing. Almost everything happens at night, so you first need to unlock the Day and Night Switch in the main story.

1. Everlasting Echoback Song

The beach is named after the enormous Echoback bones lying on its shore. There you meet Sorora, a painter with no memory of his past, who is trying to finish his Echoback paintings. Fishermen say that on moonlit nights the Echobacks’ song rises and their bones glow blue; whoever hears it will return safely from any storm. The legend feels strangely familiar to Sorora, who hopes it will bring back his memories. You offer to help.

BINI identifies the blue crystals growing on the bones: echonites. Even after an Echoback dies, they keep a strong resonance and, activated in the right order, replay the last song it ever sang. When the last echonite sounds, blue shimmers rise into the sky and gather into an Echoback under the moon. The song, coming from far out at sea, carries the Echobacks’ longing for those they lost: guided by it, the Echoback’s soul flies off and joins its family in the deep. After a hundred years of solitude, it has returned to the sea.

A rare flower then blooms on the shore. Sorora has finally finished his paintings and lets you choose a title for one of them, Symphony of Reunion or Echoes of a Vigil, before giving it to you as a keepsake. He sets off again, searching for the other places in his memory.

Step by step

  1. Talk to Sorora, the mysterious painter on the beach.
  2. If you haven’t already, progress the main story until the Day and Night Switch is unlocked.
  3. At night, strike the echonites on the Echoback bones in the correct order. An activated echonite glows faintly; if the resonance stops, strike the activated ones again. The resonance grows stronger toward the female Echoback in the distance.
  4. Pick up the rare flower that bloomed on the shore: it’s a Whalesong Blossom.
  5. Ask Sorora whether he has finished his paintings, and choose a title.

Section rewards: 1,000 Safaris, 30 Glimmer, 15,000 Credits, 30 Sparkling Crystals.

2. Stars and the Knight

The old Omega Sherro kept watch over the beach, sword in hand, even as its light faded. It is the one you fight, either through the clue “The Aging Sherro” or in the main story when you come for Echoback Salt: once defeated, it returns to the stars and entrusts you with something for the next Sherro. Since then, the beach hasn’t been peaceful, and a rumor says Susuta are wandering into its territory.

At night, three Susuta argue over who will go get back the shiny shells the Sherro supposedly took from them, the ones they give to the one they love. You help them. But the brightest “shell” turns out to be a terrified Sparkly Shelly. It explains that the Susuta are the ones who steal Shellies’ shells. The old Sherro taught it courage and took it along on patrols; now that the Sherro is gone, the Shelly wants to become the new Sherro, but doesn’t dare patrol alone.

You go with it. On the way, it warns you about the seaside flowerbeds: scales Velouria left behind when Irelia passed through can still put anyone into a very long sleep. It wakes up a sleeping Shelly, then finds the courage to drive the Susuta out of its territory. At the end, it reveals that it knows you are the one who defeated the old Sherro: the Sherro wished to return to the stars as a knight, and thanks you for granting that wish. You hand over the Sherro’s Shell Sword, which the Shelly promises to keep forever. As for the Susuta, you tell them they had dug up a Shelly, and give them a new Shell Shovel.

Step by step

  1. Make sure you have defeated the old Omega Sherro (clue “The Aging Sherro” or main story), then go back to Sherro’s beach at night.
  2. Talk to the curious Susuta.
  3. Twine with a Susuta-family Aniimo: you need it to dig. Look for the shining shell, easy to spot at night. The other spots only hold a buried Aniipod or an ordinary shell.
  4. Check the shiny shell, then talk to the Sparkly Shelly.
  5. Patrol with it. To wake the sleeping Shelly, try using shock waves.
  6. Keep patrolling and drive away the Susuta family.
  7. Talk to the Shelly, give it Sherro’s Shell Sword, then say goodbye.
  8. Go back to the Susuta, give it the new Shell Shovel and say goodbye: it gives you a gift.

Section rewards: 1,000 Safaris, 30 Glimmer, 22,500 Credits, 1 Supreme Elixir.

3. A Fragrant Journey: Echoback Landing

Elvira, a Bloomville perfumer, spends her time sitting by the water with Appo, her Budclaw. For a year she has been trying to recreate Whisper of Longing, her mother’s perfume, which could bring back every detail of a memory. The key ingredient is the Whalesong Blossom, whose buds stay buried under the gravel and only bloom when they sense sincere longing. As a child, Elvira watched her mother make them bloom, to the sound of an Echoback’s song. No matter how many memories she tells the sea, nothing grows.

You bring her a Whalesong Blossom and tell her about the Echoback, which kept moving forward with its longing. Elvira understands: longing isn’t reliving the past over and over, it’s moving forward while carrying your memories. She recreates Whisper of Longing, gives it to you, and decides to create a perfume of their own with Appo.

Step by step

  1. Follow the clue “Longing by the Water” and find Elvira at the entrance to Bloomville.
  2. Go to Echoback Landing and make the whalesong blossoms bloom. The objective asks for a Whalesong Blossom, the same one that blooms at the end of Everlasting Echoback Song.
  3. Give the Whalesong Blossom to Elvira.
  4. Chat with Elvira.

Section rewards: 600 Safaris, 30 Glimmer, 7,500 Credits, 50 Breezy Plains Dewdrop Crystals, 1 Whisper of Longing.

Whisper of Longing is the legendary perfume that restores the pink color of the Echoback Colorless Dream in Fragrant Dream.
