Evolutions that won't trigger: the requirements people skim past
An evolution that won't fire is nearly always a requirement read too quickly. The game mixes eight families: level, defeating an Alpha, an exact location, time or weather, personality, a passive talent, acquired potential, and world actions. The most common case: the Alpha kill is done, but the evolution has to be triggered in a specific spot.
On this page
“I met the requirements and nothing happens” comes up every day. In the vast majority of cases one requirement is still open — often a location or personality one, which does not look like something an evolution would ask for.
Here are the eight families the game mixes, then the most-reported blockers.
The eight families of requirements
| Family | Real example |
|---|---|
| Aniimo level | “Aniimo level 39” — the most common one, on nearly every evolution |
| Defeat an Alpha or Omega | “Defeat the Alpha Panpanta”, “Defeat the Omega Tuckin” |
| Exact location | “Located on the giant lotus leaf where the Alpha Leafy resides”, “Under the Thunder Tree in Blitzwood” |
| Time or weather | “Nighttime”, “Snowy”, “Beast Fang Ridge, daytime” |
| Personality | “Personality contains [Tenacious]”, “Personality contains [Instinctive] and [Judicious]” |
| Passive talent | “Learn passive talent [Unwavering Rampart]” |
| Acquired potential | “Acquired BREAK potential of 6 or higher” |
| World action | “Open 30 chests in total”, “Dive into the hot spring”, “Exchange an Aniimo with a friend once” |
Every evolution also consumes an evolution stone (Wave Stone, Sprout Stone, Roar Stone, Night Stone, Loam Stone…). That part is rarely the blocker, but it is worth stocking before you travel.
The most-reported blockers
Pranky → Leafy: the location is missing
The three requirements are: defeat the Alpha Leafy, Aniimo level 20, and be on the giant lotus leaf where the Alpha Leafy resides. That last one blocks almost everyone: the evolution has to be triggered on the spot.
Geodeback → Minespine: the Alpha does exist
Geodeback itself asks for nothing exotic: a Pebbling becomes Geodeback at level 38. It is the next step that worries people: Geodeback → Minespine requires defeating the Alpha Minespine, level 48 and a Loam Stone.
Contrary to what gets repeated in chat, that boss is not missing from the game: it is in Beast Fang Ridge. Its page, with location and mechanics, is in our Alpha and Omega bosses.
Fentuft → Fenmane: you need a friend
Two requirements: exchange an Aniimo with a friend once, and level 42. It is the only evolution in the game that asks for a social action. Without someone to trade with, it stays out of reach — and the exchange counts once, not per evolution.
Wisptis → Fulmintis: an item, not a boss
The evolution asks for level 29 and the Fulminous Soul item. So it is not a matter of area or Alpha: until you hold the item, the evolution cannot open.
Note that Wisptis has a second branch, Ignitis, which asks instead to defeat 3 Wisptis of the same Form as yourself in succession, in specific areas.
Helmut: two branches, two trials
- Toward Pawney: pull out the Sword of Bravery, at level 45.
- Toward Rookey: level 45, a specific passive talent, and defeat the Opponent by dealing damage with Counter in Ballistic Guard — a requirement about how you fight, not about progression.
Popota: two branches, opposite methods
- Toward Piopiota: level 39 and “approach and attract a Susuta of the opposite gender to follow”. That is exactly the manoeuvre players describe: walking your otter around other otters until one of the opposite gender follows.
- Toward Panpanta: defeat the Alpha Panpanta, level 39, at night, with a personality containing [Instinctive] and [Judicious].
The two branches ask for completely different things. If your otter’s personality does not match, the Panpanta branch will not open no matter its level — and no amount of walking will unlock it.
Pomegg → Dazmand: an event evolution
The requirement is “complete the related quests of the Aniimo Discovery event”. This evolution therefore depends on an event: outside that window, it cannot trigger. Pomegg’s other branch, Pomawk, only needs level 25.
The fake blocker: “Reach level 25”
This one is not a misread requirement, it is a French translation error.
On the second resonance star, the French interface reads “Atteignez le niveau 25”. The English version of the same string says “Reach level 35”, and the game data does require level 35.
The later stars are translated correctly:
| Star | Level actually required | French string |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 35 | “Atteignez le niveau 25” ❌ |
| 3 | 35 | “Atteignez le niveau 35” ✅ |
| 4 | 40 | “Atteignez le niveau 40” ✅ |
| 5 | 50 | “Atteignez le niveau 50” ✅ |
| 6 | 60 | “Atteignez le niveau 60” ✅ |
| 7 | 65 | “Atteignez le niveau 65” ✅ |
What evolving costs an Umbral Aniimo
The files do settle this one, and it is worth knowing before you confirm: an Umbral Aniimo loses its appearance when it evolves. The game warns you, in a confirmation box:
After evolution, the Vein energy surrounding your Aniimo will dissipate and its Umbral appearance will vanish. Confirm evolution?
The same warning exists for a form change. The good news: the potential stays — an Umbral is always at Perfect potential, and evolving does not degrade it.
Changing an Aniimo’s personality triggers no such warning. Personality is, however, a genuine evolution requirement, as shown above: changing it can open or close a branch.
For species-by-species requirements, every Aniidex page lists the recorded evolutions with their requirements and items. The menu path itself is in how to evolve an Aniimo.
Frequently asked questions
I beat the Alpha Leafy and my Pranky is level 20, why won't it evolve?
Because there is a third requirement: the evolution has to happen on the giant lotus leaf where the Alpha Leafy resides. It is a location requirement, easy to miss in the list.
Does the Alpha Minespine actually exist?
Yes. It is found in Beast Fang Ridge. Geodeback evolving into Minespine is what requires it, at level 48, with a Loam Stone.
How do I evolve a Fentuft?
You must have exchanged an Aniimo with a friend once, and the Aniimo must be level 42. Without a friend to trade with, this evolution stays out of reach.
The game asks for level 25 but nothing happens.
On the second resonance star, the French text reads "Atteignez le niveau 25" while the English string and the game data both require level 35. Take your Aniimo to level 35.
Where can I see an evolution's exact requirements?
On that species' page in our Aniidex: every recorded evolution lists its requirements and the items it consumes, exactly as the game tables describe them.
